The National Economic Council (NEC) has given approval for the release of ₦100 billion to rehabilitate training institutions belonging to the police and other security agencies across the country. The decision, which awaits final endorsement by President Bola Tinubu, marks a significant move toward strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture through improved training and capacity building.

The approval followed the submission of a detailed report by an ad hoc committee mandated to assess the condition of security training institutions nationwide. The committee was chaired by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who, in his presentation, painted a grim picture of dilapidated facilities, stressing the urgent need for an overhaul to enhance the performance of security personnel.

The virtual 154th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, also endorsed an additional ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services to support the rehabilitation project. These approvals align with President Tinubu’s earlier proposal during the 152nd NEC meeting in October, where he called for the comprehensive revamp of all security training centres in the country.

Vice President Shettima, while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to addressing the poor state of the facilities, charged the governors of the 36 states to ensure that ongoing economic reforms translate into meaningful, measurable improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians. He emphasised that the relevance of governance lies in its visible impact on citizens, insisting that government at all levels must prioritise action over rhetoric.

According to the Vice President, the era of lofty policies without tangible outcomes must be replaced by a results-driven approach that delivers real change in communities across the nation. “Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it,” Shettima declared.

He further noted that the Council’s latest resolutions reflect a shared responsibility to ensure that government reforms yield practical benefits—improvements that can be felt in markets, schools, clinics, farms, and other facets of daily life.

The rehabilitation project, once ratified by President Tinubu, is expected to reposition Nigeria’s security training institutions for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness, contributing to a more robust national security framework.
