Arsenal restored their five-point cushion at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday after securing a determined 2-1 win over 10-man Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Goals from defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber delivered a crucial victory for Mikel Arteta’s side as they moved another step closer to a first league title in 22 years. Chelsea, meanwhile, saw their hopes of clinching a Champions League spot suffer a further blow after Pedro Neto’s dismissal left them chasing the game with a numerical disadvantage.

Arsenal struck first in the 21st minute when Saliba powered the ball home after Gabriel Magalhães redirected Eberechi Eze’s corner across the face of goal. Chelsea responded in similar fashion, levelling through a corner of their own as Pedro Hincapié inadvertently turned a Reece James delivery into his own net.

The Gunners reclaimed the lead just after the hour mark as Timber headed into an unguarded net when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez misjudged Declan Rice’s lofted ball. The strike marked Arsenal’s 16th Premier League goal from a corner this season, equalling the all-time competition record for set-piece conversions from corners.

Chelsea’s night unravelled further when Neto received two bookings in quick succession, making him the ninth Blues player to be sent off this season. Despite a late push, including a potential equaliser that was ruled out for offside, Chelsea slipped to a defeat that leaves Liam Rosenior’s men three points outside the top five—positions almost certain to offer Champions League qualification next season.

Meanwhile, the title race remains tense. Second-placed Manchester City still hold a game in hand and will host Arsenal in a pivotal showdown next month, a match that could heavily influence the destiny of the Premier League crown.
