TRAIN COLLISION IN INDONESIA CLAIMS THREE LIVES AND LEAVES 28 INJURED

In West Java province, Indonesia, a collision between two commuter trains has resulted in at least three fatalities and 28 injuries, according to authorities. Emergency crews are actively working to extricate two individuals still trapped in the severely damaged railway cars.

The incident occurred when a long-distance train traveling from Surabaya, the country’s second-largest city, collided with a commuter train near Bandung, the provincial capital, as reported by Adita Irawati, spokeswoman for the Transport Ministry.

Video footage from local broadcasters MetroTV and Kompas TV depicted passengers being assisted out of train carriages, some of which had derailed entirely following the 6:03 am local time (23:03 GMT) collision.

Rescue teams are evaluating the best approach to free the two individuals lodged between the carriages, with their condition unknown at this time.

Among the three casualties were the driver and assistant on the commuter train and a steward on the express train, confirmed Ibrahim Tompo, a regional spokesperson for West Java police.

At the time of the crash, a total of 478 passengers were on board the trains. While the cause of the accident remains unclear, both train operator PT KAI and the provincial government, in conjunction with transport safety officials, have committed to conducting a thorough investigation.
