Nizhny Novgorod, Russia – June 12, 2024: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in bilateral discussions with foreign ministers from Brazil, South Africa, Iran, Laos, Thailand, and Ethiopia on the sidelines of the BRICS foreign ministers’ summit. The summit, held on June 10-11, sets the stage for the major BRICS leaders’ meeting in Kazan this October, marking a pivotal event in Russia’s chairmanship year.
A key moment during the talks was Lavrov’s meeting with Iran’s acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri, who expressed gratitude for Russia’s condolences following the tragic helicopter crash in May that claimed the lives of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and other officials. Lavrov reassured Bagheri of Moscow’s steadfast support for Iran, emphasizing Russia’s commitment to “the continuity of our relations and the unchanging attitude towards the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas.”
The discussions underscored the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation and preparing for the upcoming BRICS summit, where leaders will convene to discuss strategies for enhancing global economic and political collaboration.
