MYANMAR MILITARY JUNTA TO RELEASE 9,652 PRISONERS ON HUMANITARIAN GROUNDS

Myanmar’s military government is set to release 9,652 prisoners, including 114 foreigners, as part of an amnesty to commemorate the country’s independence day, according to state media. The Southeast Asian nation has faced upheaval since the military takeover in February 2021, which marked a reversal of a decade-long democratic experiment and involved the use of lethal force to suppress protests.

In a brief announcement on state media, the junta stated, “With the intention of maintaining relations with other countries and on humanitarian grounds, 114 foreign prisoners will be pardoned.” As per local media reports, groups of people gathered outside Insein Prison in the country’s commercial capital, Yangon, awaiting the release of prisoners.

Notably, Nobel laureate Aung Kyi remains incarcerated, challenging sentences totaling 27 years in detention. She has been convicted on various charges, including incitement, election fraud, and corruption, all of which she denies. The military contends that she has undergone a fair legal process through an independent court.

It is customary for authorities to release some prisoners on the occasion of Myanmar’s independence day, which marks the country’s liberation from British rule.
