Elon Musk is set to host Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), on X (formerly Twitter) this Thursday, raising concerns in Berlin and Brussels about the billionaire’s potential influence on Germany’s upcoming national election on February 23.
Musk, who has previously used his platform and resources to support political campaigns, has drawn criticism for endorsing the AfD, an anti-immigration and anti-Islamic party classified as a right-wing extremist organization by German security agencies. His engagement with far-right and anti-establishment parties across Europe has alarmed leaders who see it as meddling in domestic politics.
The AfD, which opposes Germany’s traditional political establishment, has been ostracized by other major parties. Musk’s public backing of the party and his criticism of Germany’s center-left leaders, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have added to the tension. Musk described Steinmeier as a “tyrant” for condemning the AfD and called for Scholz to step down after a tragic car attack at a Christmas market.
Musk, known for his libertarian ideals, has defended his political involvement in Germany, citing his “significant investments” in the country, including Tesla’s first European factory, which opened in 2022. He has praised the AfD’s approach to deregulation, taxation, and economic policy, aligning it with his own views on market freedom.
The scheduled live discussion with Weidel, who is an economist fluent in English and Mandarin, is set for 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) and comes on the heels of Musk’s prior political interventions, including his support for Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns.
European leaders have expressed alarm over Musk’s activities. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused Musk of undermining democratic institutions, while France’s foreign minister urged the EU to strengthen protections against external interference in political processes.
Despite the backlash, the planned talk with Weidel is moving forward, raising broader questions about the role of influential tech figures in shaping political narratives and outcomes. Musk’s growing involvement in European politics is now being closely watched as Germany and the EU grapple with balancing free speech, democracy, and external influence.
