TUC Condemns New Fuel Price Hike, Warns of Increased Poverty and Social Unrest

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed strong opposition to the recent increase in the pump price of petroleum, warning that it will exacerbate poverty among workers. In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo criticized the Federal Government for implementing the hike without consulting key stakeholders, describing the move as a disregard for the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the working class.

Osifo called on the government to reverse the decision immediately, strengthen the naira, and take decisive measures to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. He emphasized that the sudden increases in fuel and electricity costs, which include a 250 percent hike in electricity tariffs, will worsen existing economic hardships and could lead to social unrest.

“The government must act swiftly to restore confidence and prevent further deterioration in the living conditions of its citizens,” Osifo said. He criticized the timing and scale of the increases, noting that they impose undue hardship on ordinary Nigerians while those in power continue to benefit from increased allocations and affluence.

Osifo also highlighted that the weak naira is a significant contributor to the country’s economic problems. He questioned why the burden of high living costs should fall on common citizens when the government has not made efforts to reduce the cost of governance or address economic issues effectively.

The TUC remains committed to advocating for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent work environment, and it will continue to defend the rights and interests of Nigerian workers.
