TCN: Nigeria Provides 24-Hour Electricity to Benin, Niger, and Togo

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that Nigeria supplies round-the-clock electricity to its neighboring countries, Togo, Benin Republic, and Niger.

In a recent interview on Channels TV’s ‘Sunday Politics,’ TCN CEO Sule Abdulaziz confirmed, “We provide 24-hour power supply to Togo, Benin, and Niger. They are receiving electricity from Nigeria and are paying for it.”

He added that while not all Nigerians enjoy the same level of service, some do receive nearly 24-hour power. “Those in Band A typically get between 20 to 22 hours of supply,” he explained.

Abdulaziz noted that each electricity distribution company (DisCo) categorizes its customers into Bands, with Band A prioritized for near-continuous supply. However, he mentioned that regulators require DisCos to deliver between 18 and 22 hours of electricity.

He also clarified that TCN cannot be held responsible for all instances of national grid failures, stating, “Grid collapses can originate from generation, transmission, or distribution issues, and sometimes they are due to unforeseen disasters. It’s essential to conduct investigations to determine the causes of any grid failures.”

Additionally, on October 13, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that international customers owe N9.41 billion for electricity supplied in the second quarter of 2024.
