Officer Killed in Attack on Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Anambra State

An officer has lost his life following an assault by unknown gunmen on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Anambra State. Reports indicate that a large group of assailants attacked the police facility in the early hours of Tuesday, September 3, 2024, using explosives and firearms.

The attack, which resulted in the death of one police corporal and injuries to several others, occurred during a time of heightened tension. The motive behind the assault remains unclear but coincides with a declaration by secessionist leader Simon Ekpa. Ekpa had called for a month-long campaign of hostility against government institutions in the Southeast, beginning August 28, 2024.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the attack and provided additional details. According to Ikenga, the secessionists fired shots indiscriminately and threw petrol bombs, igniting fires in various parts of the police facility and the nearby civic center.

In response to the attack, a joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies has been launched in Oba and surrounding areas to address the situation and restore order.
