In response to escalating violence amid protests against economic hardship, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has declared a 24-hour curfew. The announcement, made through a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, came on Thursday after an Emergency State Security Council meeting focused on the unrest.
The decision to impose the curfew was unanimously made during the emergency meeting to safeguard lives and protect public and private property. “The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of our communities. It is paramount that we protect our citizens from further harm and preserve the sanctity of our state’s institutions and businesses,” Tofa stated.
Governor Yusuf called on all citizens to remain vigilant and united during this challenging period, urging them not to let the actions of a few individuals create division. “Together, we can navigate these challenges and fortify our resolve to build a stronger, more resilient Kano State,” he said.
All security agencies in the state have been directed to enforce the curfew strictly, and citizens are urged to comply for their safety and the well-being of all.
Earlier reports indicated that hoodlums looted the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park in Kano State, setting the building on fire and stealing valuable equipment, including computers, furniture, and electronics. Photos and videos circulating online show the extent of the damage caused by the looters.
Governor Yusuf’s declaration of the curfew aims to prevent further violence and ensure the protection of Kano’s residents and infrastructure.
