The Kano State Government has voiced strong opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bill currently under review by Nigeria’s National Assembly. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the proposal as “ill-timed, lopsided, and detrimental to national unity,” urging President Bola Tinubu to prioritize tackling poverty and hunger, especially in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking through his deputy, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, during New Year celebrations in Kano, Governor Yusuf criticized the bill amidst widespread economic hardship and insecurity. “This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges,” he stated, adding, “Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people.”
The governor praised Kano residents for their resilience during challenging economic times and called for more inclusive policies to address hyperinflation and extreme poverty.
Highlighting his administration’s accomplishments, Governor Yusuf pointed to progress in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs. He also celebrated two significant victories in 2024: the Supreme Court ruling that upheld his election as governor and the reinstatement of Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, which he described as a triumph for the people’s will.
The New Year celebration in Kano was marked by vibrant performances from renowned Hausa artists, creating a festive atmosphere for families and friends. The event culminated in a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the Kano skyline, symbolizing hope and renewal for the year ahead.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu, Governor Yusuf encouraged Kano residents to embrace unity and work toward shared prosperity in 2025. “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress,” he said. “Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
As the debate over the Tax Reform Bill continues, Kano State’s opposition underscores broader regional concerns about economic policies and their impact on vulnerable populations.
