The political landscape in Edo State is becoming increasingly charged as 17 candidates prepare to contest the upcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024. With various promises and agendas, these candidates are vying for the opportunity to shape the future of the state. Among them, three prominent figures represent distinct political parties, all aiming to secure the top seat in the Government House come 2025.
Senator Monday Okpebholo, the gubernatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), stands as a significant figure in Edo Central politics. His campaign has been centered on improving infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing public services. On the other side, Asue Ighodalo, the candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), brings his experience as a Lagos-based lawyer and former chairperson of Sterling Bank. His campaign manifesto, titled “Pathway to Prosperity for All,” emphasizes the importance of security, as well as the development of women and youth.
Another candidate garnering attention in the Edo race is Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) nominee. Akpata, a well-known Nigerian lawyer and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has emerged as a key contender in the election.
In preparation for the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State presented digital copies of the voter register to the participating political parties. Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, handed over the registers to the chairpersons, secretaries, and officials of the parties at the INEC office in Benin City. Notably, Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party was also presented with a copy of the register. This move was prompted by the ongoing leadership crisis within the party, which has resulted in a division among its members.
In a related development, Adams Oshiomhole, a prominent member of the APC, former governor of Edo State, and the current Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, has called on the people of Esanland to support the APC governorship candidate. Oshiomhole expressed confidence in Okpebholo’s ability to bring development to the state and Esanland, citing their shared experience as colleagues in the Senate as evidence of Okpebholo’s competence.
As the election date draws near, the citizens of Edo State are faced with the prospect of either a change in government or the continuation of the current administration. The outcome of the September 21st polls will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the future direction of the state.
