Governor Sanwo-Olu Urges Improved Hygiene Amidst Rising Cholera Cases During Eid-el Kabir Celebration

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has called for enhanced personal and environmental hygiene to combat the spread of cholera in the state. Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu made this plea during his goodwill message at the 2024 Eid-el Kabir celebration held at the Government House in Alausa, Ikeja. The event, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, focused on the theme “Leveraging on the Gains of Hajj and Eid-el Kabir for Building a Better Society.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness, especially during the rainy season, which often exacerbates the spread of cholera due to flooding. “Cholera has started to raise its ugly head in our state and across the country. We must be very careful with our hygiene. Let us make sure that our environment is clean,” he urged. He advised residents to wash their hands regularly and heed public health advisories to protect themselves from the disease. The Governor highlighted that cleanliness is an essential aspect of religious practice and is in line with the will of Almighty Allah.

In addition to addressing public health, Sanwo-Olu called for peaceful coexistence among residents, regardless of religious differences. He encouraged making necessary sacrifices to advance the welfare of families, the state, and the nation at large.

The First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Claudiana Sanwo-Olu, also addressed the gathering, urging residents to support the state government in delivering the dividends of democracy. She specifically called for cooperation in combating gender-based violence, sexual violence, and domestic violence. Mrs. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for proper enlightenment on the Quran’s teachings regarding gender-based violence, advocating for a more informed and harmonious society.
