Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has pledged to upgrade the state’s health training institutions with state-of-the-art equipment to enhance educational quality and produce highly skilled healthcare professionals. He made this commitment during a reception honoring the outgoing Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Abubakar Faruk.
Aliyu acknowledged that the absence of modern teaching tools has significantly hindered effective education in state-owned health institutions, which fails to align with global best practices. He emphasized the urgent need to rectify this situation, stating, “We cannot continue with obsolete teaching equipment when technology is advancing rapidly in the realm of digital and advanced tools.”
Improving the health sector is a cornerstone of his administration’s nine-point agenda, according to the governor. He also highlighted recent efforts to bolster the workforce by recruiting over 800 nurses and midwives who had been awaiting employment for nearly a decade, addressing the pressing need for skilled personnel in the state’s healthcare system.
In his remarks, Governor Aliyu expressed gratitude for Dr. Faruk’s significant contributions to the development of the state’s School of Nursing during his tenure. He assured attendees that the administration would leverage Faruk’s extensive experience for the benefit of Sokoto State.
The event concluded with the governor presenting an ‘Award of Excellence’ from Senator Aliyu Wamakko to Dr. Faruk in recognition of his dedicated service to both the country and the state.
