FUPRE to Launch Pioneering Waste Management Program in 2025/2026

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) in Delta State has announced its plan to introduce a new program focused on waste management and technology, beginning in the 2025/2026 academic session. This announcement was made by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, during the launch of the Zero Waste Campus Project, supported by the Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF).

Professor Rim-Rukeh emphasized that FUPRE serves as a key center for addressing environmental issues and stressed the significant impact of improper waste management. He highlighted the university’s commitment to turning waste into valuable resources through a collaboration with partners and the establishment of the Center for Waste Management.

The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the university is responding to a gap in sustainability education by offering a Post Graduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology. This new program aims to educate students and extend the benefits of waste management practices to the broader community.

Earlier, Richard Benin, Executive Director of CODAF, urged higher education institutions to prioritize responsible consumption, waste reduction, and recycling. He praised FUPRE for being the first Nigerian institution to embark on this initiative and expressed the hope that the university will become the leading Zero Waste institution in Nigeria and Africa.

Benin also advocated for the establishment of a Post Graduate Program in Zero Waste Project, emphasizing that such a program would address both health and environmental concerns and reduce reliance on plastic waste. He envisions a comprehensive strategy for fostering a sustainable campus culture through innovative solutions and active community participation.

If approved, this program would set a global precedent, marking FUPRE as the first institution worldwide to offer such a pioneering course.
