In a significant move aimed at restoring fairness and upholding the integrity of the judicial system, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, officially swore in three judges who had previously been overlooked by the former administration of Godwin Obaseki. This action marks a vital step in Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to ensuring justice and fairness within the state’s judiciary.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Festival Hall in Government House, where the Governor recalled his promise from his inaugural speech to address the issue of the judges’ delayed appointments. Eleven months after the National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended eight individuals for judicial positions in the Edo State High Court, only five had been appointed under the previous administration, leaving three qualified candidates without an official role despite their clearance by the NJC.
Governor Okpebholo used this opportunity to stress the importance of equality and fairness within the state’s governance. “No one should be discriminated against, marginalised, or treated unfairly for personal reasons or due to their lack of political influence,” he asserted. He emphasized that these new judges would uphold a high standard of conduct in their duties, ensuring fair dispute resolution, protecting citizens’ rights, and administering justice to all.
The newly sworn-in judges—Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—are now poised to join their colleagues at the Edo State High Court, taking their places as pillars of justice. The Governor expressed confidence that they would serve as beacons of hope for the people, reinforcing the crucial role of the judiciary in the state’s democratic system.
Responding on behalf of the trio, Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for providing them the opportunity to serve. She thanked him for making their swearing-in possible within just three weeks of his tenure, and offered prayers for the success of his administration and the advancement of justice. “We assure you that we will dispense justice without fear or favour,” Osa declared, signaling their commitment to integrity and impartiality as they take on their new responsibilities.
This action by Governor Okpebholo is seen as a significant move towards fostering a fairer and more transparent judicial system in Edo State, setting a precedent for inclusivity and justice for all.
