In the early hours of Thursday, a building under construction at Arowojobe Estate in Maryland, Lagos, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of three site workers. The tragic incident occurred at No. 13, Wilson Mba Street.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the agency received a distress call at 3:49 a.m. and promptly arrived at the scene at 3:58 a.m. Upon arrival, LASEMA found that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.
“One of the rescued individuals was receiving treatment on-site,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “Search and rescue operations began immediately, and three adult males were recovered dead. Two male adults were rescued alive, and one adult male trapped under the rubble was rescued.”
The swift response by LASEMA helped to save lives, but the loss of three workers underscores the dangers faced by construction workers and the need for stringent safety measures on construction sites. Further investigations are likely to follow to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future occurrences.
