Abuja, Nigeria – June 12, 2024: The Super Eagles of Nigeria have vowed to overcome their challenging start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and secure their spot in the tournament despite a recent disappointing performance. Nigeria’s World Cup campaign suffered a major setback with a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on Monday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
This defeat has left Nigeria languishing in fifth place in Group C with only three points from four matches, trailing behind group leaders Benin Republic, who have accumulated seven points following their victory over the Super Eagles.
Reflecting on their performance, the players took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their determination to turn things around. “We are back in the country and we are not happy about the way the two games panned out,” the Super Eagles said. “We have had talks among ourselves and have resolved to fight hard till the end to ensure we do the impossible, which is qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. We don’t take your support for granted, we thank you immensely.”
The World Cup qualifiers will continue in March 2025, where Nigeria is set to face Rwanda in Kigali and Zimbabwe in Uyo. The Super Eagles are committed to maximizing their remaining opportunities to clinch a World Cup berth, promising to fight until the very end.
