Russian Olympic Committee Compensates Athletes Excluded from Paris 2024 Games

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) has compensated 245 athletes who did not meet the criteria to compete in the Paris 2024 Games this month, according to a report by the RIA state news agency on Thursday.

Due to restrictions imposed on Russian and Belarusian athletes following geopolitical tensions, competitors from these nations are barred from participating under their national flags, anthems, and emblems. They must instead compete neutrally, adhering to additional vetting processes to ensure no affiliation with Russia’s military or support for its actions.

“We have paid compensation to 245 athletes. These are those athletes who initially did not get the right to compete in international competitions and those who did not receive neutral status,” stated Vladimir Sengleyev, general director of the Russian Olympic Committee, as quoted by RIA.

Among those compensated is Artur Dalaloyan, a 28-year-old gymnast who received approximately 500,000 roubles ($5,600). Details on compensation for other athletes were not disclosed by RIA.

The number of Russian athletes confirmed to participate in Paris has significantly decreased to just 16, down from 335 at the Tokyo Games in 2021. This reduction follows decisions by several sports federations to withdraw their squads in protest against what they view as restrictive and humiliating conditions.

The Paris 2024 Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26th to August 11th, with ongoing implications from geopolitical tensions shaping participation and international sporting diplomacy.
