President Bola Tinubu has urged African military forces to strengthen their cooperation to tackle insecurity and other threats undermining the continent’s unity and stability. Speaking at the official opening of the 2nd edition of the Africa Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the importance of collective effort in addressing Africa’s security challenges.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Tinubu hailed the Games as a historic platform for fostering unity, camaraderie, and collaboration among Africa’s military institutions. This year’s event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” marks the revival of a tradition first established over two decades ago in Nairobi, Kenya.
“No single nation can tackle its security challenges alone,” Tinubu stated. “Our collective safety and the well-being of our people demand that we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, as one united Africa.”
Reviving Tradition and Building Unity
President Tinubu underscored the dual purpose of the Games: celebrating athletic excellence and strengthening ties among African military forces. He praised the leadership of Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General M. Abdullahi, for their efforts in reviving the event.
“This occasion is more than a gathering of extraordinary athletes; it is an undeniable reminder of the cooperation that binds the military institutions across our continent,” Tinubu said. “We reaffirm the promise of what we can achieve when we stand together—not just as neighbours, but as guardians of a continent that depends on your valour, sacrifices, and unyielding dedication.”
Sports as a Tool for Resilience and Security
The President highlighted the role of sports in fostering key qualities such as physical fitness, discipline, and resilience among military personnel. These attributes, he noted, are essential for addressing Africa’s multifaceted security issues.
“Sports not only keep us physically fit but also instill core values such as integrity, excellence, and discipline,” Tinubu added. “When our men and women are fit, they are better equipped to confront the challenges of their duties with resilience and confidence.”
A Vision for a Secure Africa
Beyond physical readiness, Tinubu stressed the importance of unity in addressing the continent’s shared security threats. He called for deepened friendships and partnerships across African nations to build a collective defense against common challenges.
“The security challenges we face cannot be addressed through kinetic measures alone,” he said. “As long as any nation within our shared geography remains under threat, none of us can declare our continent secure. Together, we will build a safer, stronger Africa.”
A Spectacular Opening Ceremony
The event’s opening ceremony featured an aerobics display, artistic performances, the hoisting of the OSMA and AMGA flags, an oath-taking ceremony by athletes and officials, and the symbolic lighting of the games torch by Vice President Shettima.
The Africa Military Games stand as a powerful symbol of unity and cooperation, embodying a vision of an Africa where collaboration and resilience pave the way for lasting peace and security.
