Nigeria Olympic Committee Receives Key Reports on Constitution Review and Sports Infrastructure Refurbishment

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially received reports from its Constitution Review Committee and a review concerning the refurbishment of sports infrastructure at the Amuwo Odofin Olympic Sports Village. These significant developments were presented during a meeting at the Secretariat of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) in Abuja.

Sani Hussaini Garun Gabbas, the chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, presented the first report. He highlighted that the committee’s work was guided by its terms of reference, ensuring that the perspectives of all stakeholders were comprehensively incorporated. This approach aligns with the fundamental principles of the Olympic movement, emphasizing inclusivity and adherence to international standards.

The second report, focusing on the refurbishment of sports infrastructure, was presented by Mr. Jonathan Nnaji, the chairman of the committee overseeing the project. Nnaji detailed that after a thorough and rigorous selection process, two companies were chosen to rehabilitate the sports facilities at the Amuwo Odofin Olympic Sports Village in Lagos. This site includes a variety of facilities for football, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and other indoor and outdoor sports.

Receiving the reports, NOC President Mr. Habu Gumel expressed his gratitude to the committee members for their diligent work. He assured sports stakeholders that the NOC is committed to fully implementing the recommendations outlined in both reports.

It is worth noting that the six-member Constitution Review Committee was inaugurated in February with the mandate to oversee and recommend changes to the NOC’s constitution. This review process aims to ensure that the constitution reflects contemporary practices and upholds the values of the Olympic movement.

The refurbishment project at the Amuwo Odofin Olympic Sports Village marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sports development. The newly upgraded facilities are expected to host a variety of sports events, enhancing the country’s capability to stage both national and international competitions and promoting sports at all levels.

These initiatives signify the NOC’s dedication to strengthening the governance and infrastructure of sports in Nigeria, fostering a more robust environment for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
