Former Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag has broken his silence following his abrupt dismissal from the Bundesliga side, describing the club’s decision as both shocking and unprecedented.
In a statement released earlier today, the Dutch manager expressed disbelief at being relieved of his duties after just two league matches in charge. “Leverkusen’s decision to lay me off was a big surprise,” Ten Hag said. “Parting ways with a head coach after just two league matches is something absolutely unprecedented.”
Ten Hag highlighted the challenges he inherited at the club, noting that several key players who contributed to past successes had departed over the summer. He argued that building a new team requires patience and trust, qualities he believes were not afforded to him.
“A new manager deserves the space to implement his vision, set the standards, shape the squad, and leave his mark on the style of play,” he explained. “I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust.”
Reflecting on his managerial career, the former Ajax and Manchester United coach insisted that when given the opportunity to see a project through, success has always followed. “Throughout my career, every season I have been able to see through to the end as a coach has brought success. Clubs that placed their trust in me have been rewarded with success and silverware,” he said.
Despite his disappointment, Ten Hag ended his statement on a gracious note, thanking Leverkusen fans for their unwavering support and wishing the squad and staff success for the rest of the campaign. “Finally, I would like to thank Leverkusen supporters for their warmth and passion, and so I wish the squad and staff every success for the remainder of the season,” he concluded.
The sacking has drawn mixed reactions among football followers, with many questioning the club’s decision to part ways with the coach so early into the season.
