Dricus du Plessis Submits Israel Adesanya in Fourth Round to Retain UFC Middleweight Title

In a dramatic showdown at UFC 305 in Perth, Australia, South African middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis retained his title by defeating former champion Israel Adesanya of Nigeria. The fight ended in the fourth round with a submission, marking a significant victory for Du Plessis and a rare defeat by submission for Adesanya.

The decisive moment came three minutes and 38 seconds into the round when Du Plessis landed back-to-back right hooks, sending Adesanya retreating to the canvas. Seizing the opportunity, Du Plessis took Adesanya’s back and locked in a rear-naked choke, forcing the Nigerian-New Zealander to tap out. This submission marked the first of Adesanya’s professional MMA career, bringing his record to 24 wins and four losses.

Du Plessis, who has remained unbeaten in his eight UFC fights, now boasts a record of 21-2. Reflecting on his victory, Du Plessis acknowledged the challenge posed by Adesanya, widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the division. “I always knew if I’m in trouble fighting one of the, if not the best strikers ever in this division, I need that takedown,” Du Plessis said after his successful title defense.

The fight saw intense exchanges, with Du Plessis securing a takedown in the second round and attempting to submit Adesanya. However, Adesanya fought back, delivering powerful kicks and punches in the third round. Despite the fierce competition, Du Plessis ultimately prevailed, though he expressed respect for Adesanya’s striking ability. “Believe me, I do not want to get kicked by that man again,” he admitted.

Despite the loss, Adesanya, who has now lost three of his last four fights, remained defiant about his future in the sport. “I just made a stupid, dumb mistake,” he said. “I’m 35, I’m doing the right things… watch this, I’m not leaving.”

The victory solidifies Du Plessis’ position at the top of the middleweight division, while Adesanya looks ahead to regroup and continue his storied career.
