Defender Enyinnaya Kazie’s Late Goal Propels Rivers United to CAF Confederation Cup Quarter-Finals

Rivers United clinched a dramatic victory in their final group stage match of the CAF Confederation Cup, with defender Enyinnaya Kazie emerging as the hero by scoring a late winner against 10-man Dreams FC of Ghana. The thrilling encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, saw the Pride of Rivers secure a 2-1 triumph, sealing their spot in the quarter-finals.

Facing the prospect of elimination from the tournament, the 2022 NPFL champions rallied back from an early setback when Abdul Aziz Issah opened the scoring for Dreams FC just before halftime. However, Deputy Echeta leveled the scoreline for Rivers United in the 61st minute, setting the stage for a tense second half.

Dreams FC’s hopes were further diminished when Seth Agyemang received a red card, reducing them to 10 men. Despite resilient defense from the Ghanaians, Rivers United intensified their attack, with Enyinnaya Kazie eventually breaking the deadlock with a powerful low drive in the dying minutes of stoppage time.

The victory propelled Rivers United to the summit of their group with 12 points, securing their passage to the quarter-finals alongside Dreams FC. North African side Club Africain, despite their efforts, finished third in the group standings, with 10 points.

As Rivers United advance to the next stage of the competition, they join other formidable teams including USM Alger, Future FC, Zamalek, Abu Salim, RS Berkane, and Stade Malien in the quest for continental glory. The draw for the quarter-finals is set to take place later this month, promising further excitement in the tournament.
