Security operatives have dispersed a group of protesters in the Karu area of the Federal Capital Territory, arresting at least three individuals. The protesters were assembling when security agents intervened, using teargas to disperse the crowd.
One of the protesters, Yahaya Abdullahi, described the incident, stating, “Our people were just coming out and the police and other security agents started tear-gassing us and arrested some of our people, we know of three for now.”
The protests, which have been ongoing since August 1, are part of the broader #EndBadGovernance movement, which has seen Nigerians taking to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with economic hardship and poor governance. The use of force by security agencies has been a contentious issue, with reports of violence and arrests occurring in various parts of the country.
The actions of the security forces in Karu add to the growing list of incidents where law enforcement has clashed with protesters, raising concerns about the handling of public dissent and the right to peaceful assembly.
