President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to six distinguished Nigerian scientists and engineers, who were among the 400 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), awarded by U.S. President Joe Biden. The recognition, which was announced on January 14, 2025, highlights the exceptional contributions of early career scientists and engineers across various disciplines.
Established in 1996 by former President Bill Clinton, PECASE is the highest honour bestowed by the United States government on individuals who have shown exceptional promise in science, engineering, and technology. This year’s recipients are affiliated with 14 different U.S. government agencies, reflecting the diverse and groundbreaking work being done in the scientific community.
Among the honoured Nigerians are Azeez Butali, a Professor of Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry; Ijeoma Opara, an Associate Professor of Public Health at Yale University; and Oluwatomi Akindele, a Postdoctoral Researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Also recognised are Eno Ebong, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University; Oluwasanmi Koyejo, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University; and Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair of the Case School of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), President Tinubu praised the honourees for their trailblazing work in science, technology, and engineering. He noted that their achievements not only bring honour to Nigeria but also underscore the immense potential of Nigerians to excel both locally and on the global stage.
The President expressed hope that these distinguished individuals would continue to share their multidisciplinary expertise, contributing to Nigeria’s growth and development under his Renewed Hope Agenda. Tinubu’s congratulations reflect his commitment to fostering talent and innovation in Nigeria, as well as encouraging greater collaboration between Nigerian professionals and global institutions.
