Rivers State Police Command to Uphold Court Orders During Local Government Elections

The Rivers State Police Command has announced its commitment to enforce court orders regarding the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday. In a statement released by spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command acknowledged receiving a restraining order that prohibits them from providing security during these elections.

This follows a judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 30, 2024, which explicitly bars the police and other security agencies from participating in the electoral process. The Command’s Legal Department has advised that this ruling takes precedence, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal directives.

The statement also addressed a recent protest by members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who demanded compliance with the court orders and called for the cancellation of the elections in the state.

In light of these developments, the Nigeria Police Force has been directed to ensure full compliance with the Federal High Court’s ruling, which forbids any involvement in the election. All Area Commanders and Tactical Commanders are urged to uphold this judgment and maintain peace and order during this critical period. The police encourage citizens to remain calm and cooperative with law enforcement as they navigate this complex situation.
