REA Hails President Tinubu’s N100 Billion Solar Power Initiative for Public Institutions

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr. Abba Aliyu, has expressed his excitement and appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s approval of N100 billion in the 2025 budget proposal, aimed at deploying solar-powered energy to public institutions across the country. Mr. Aliyu made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja during the 2024 budget performance review and the presentation of the 2025 budget proposal, which was organised by the House Committee on Rural Electrification.

During the session, Mr. Aliyu, alongside Mr. Umar Ganduje, the son of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and the REA’s Executive Director of Technical Services, highlighted the significance of the budget allocation. He emphasised that the N100 billion approved for the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative would help reduce the cost of governance by providing solar-powered energy to public institutions, replacing the expensive and inefficient use of diesel-powered generators.

“This is the largest budget in REA’s history, and a major aspect of it is the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, which is championed by President Tinubu,” Mr. Aliyu said. “The purpose of this initiative is to solarise public sector institutions, which will significantly cut the expenses associated with generating power through diesel and generators.” He further explained that the federal government recognises the potential of solar energy to reduce operational costs for public institutions while promoting sustainability.

In his remarks, Mr. Aliyu noted that, in previous years, the government had spent significant amounts of money on fuel and generator maintenance for public institutions. With the introduction of solar power, this cost would be drastically reduced, allowing funds to be redirected towards other developmental projects. The REA has been tasked with spearheading this initiative, which aligns with the federal government’s focus on cutting down unnecessary expenditures and fostering green energy solutions.

While discussing the agency’s progress, Mr. Aliyu reflected on the success of various projects undertaken by the REA in 2024, including grid extensions and the deployment of mini-grids in agricultural areas to support productivity. Additionally, the agency made significant strides in deploying solar home systems, helping to bring sustainable energy to remote areas.

Mr. Aliyu also praised the government’s increased financial commitment to the REA, noting that the proposed budget for 2025 stands at over N500 billion, a sharp increase from last year’s N160 billion budget. “This year’s budget allocation is more than sufficient to carry out our initiatives, and we are committed to delivering on the promises outlined in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

As the agency prepares for the rollout of solar energy projects across public institutions, Mr. Aliyu expressed confidence in the REA’s ability to implement these projects effectively, making the most of the substantial funding provided in the 2025 budget. With this initiative, the REA aims to drive the country toward a more sustainable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient future.
