Police Arrest Protesters at EndSARS Memorial in Lagos

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State during a memorial event commemorating the EndSARS protests. The arrests took place on Sunday, October 20, 2024, as participants gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, Lekki Tollgate incident.

According to eyewitnesses and a viral video circulating on social media, the peaceful march was interrupted when police officers began firing tear gas and gunshots to disperse the crowd. Several protesters were subsequently detained and transported in a black maria vehicle.

The police have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident at the time of this report.

The EndSARS memorial was organized to honor the victims of the 2020 protests, when Nigerian youths staged demonstrations across the country, protesting police brutality under the hashtag #EndSARS. The protests targeted the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police notorious for its record of human rights abuses.

On October 20, 2020, Nigerian military forces allegedly opened fire on peaceful protesters at the Lekki Tollgate, resulting in multiple deaths. The location has since become a symbolic site for memorials and protests related to the EndSARS movement.
