Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has denounced the recent raid on the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS). SERAP alerted the public through its official X account on Monday, revealing that DSS agents had taken over its Abuja office. The organization has urged President Tinubu to immediately instruct the DSS to halt the harassment, intimidation, and violations of Nigerians’ rights.
In response, Sani took to his official X account to voice his alarm over the incident, emphasizing that security agencies must uphold the fundamental rights of SERAP and its members as enshrined in the country’s constitution. He stated, “The reported invasion of the SERAP office is concerning. Security agencies must respect the fundamental rights of the organization, its officials, and its members as guaranteed by the constitution of the country.”
Additionally, Amnesty International has criticized President Bola Tinubu for the “unlawful” intrusion into SERAP’s office by DSS operatives. The organization, in a statement posted on X, condemned the president for his administration’s aggressive measures against dissenting voices, asserting, “Amnesty International received a disturbing report of the unlawful invasion of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project by operatives of the DSS. President Bola Tinubu is going too far in his government’s repressive efforts to silence dissenting voices.”
