Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has responded to criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s two-week holiday in the United Kingdom, asserting that detractors are misinformed. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, Okupe addressed concerns regarding the President’s decision to travel abroad rather than remain in Nigeria.
He emphasized that the trip is a strategic choice aimed at providing Tinubu with the opportunity to reflect on the past 17 months and consider a new direction for his administration, particularly in light of ongoing national challenges. “The President has willfully separated himself from officials, friends, and associates to engage in this period of reflection,” Okupe explained.
He further noted that this retreat is designed to help Tinubu avoid undue political interference while he re-evaluates his cabinet. “Staying in Nigeria would not offer him the peaceful and serene environment needed to achieve his objectives,” he added.
Okupe expressed optimism that Tinubu’s return after this period of introspection would bring positive developments for Nigerians and address the pressing needs of the populace.
It was reported that Tinubu departed Abuja on October 2 for the UK, marking his first vacation since taking office in May 2023. According to a statement from Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the trip will serve as both a working vacation and a retreat focused on the administration’s economic reforms. Despite this holiday, Tinubu has previously undertaken several foreign trips since his inauguration.
