Nigerian Universities Ordered to Ensure Safety Amid Planned Nationwide Protests

In anticipation of the national protest scheduled for August 1, the Federal Ministry of Education has issued a directive to all Vice Chancellors of Nigerian universities to ensure the protection of staff, students, and public infrastructure within their institutions.

This directive, communicated through the National Universities Commission (NUC) and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Chris Maiyaki on Monday morning, acknowledges the right to protest while expressing concerns about potential violence. The circular, titled “Urgent Arrangements for the Security and Safety of University Staff, Students and Property During the Proposed Nationwide Protests,” originates from the directive of Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman.

The circular states, “The Minister of Education has directed that the attention of Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian universities be formally drawn to the plan by unknown groups to embark on nationwide protests. The Federal Government is not unaware of the right of any Nigerian to peaceful protest but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property should there be any protest action.”

It continues, “Consequently, the Honourable Minister has directed that Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian universities should take proactive steps to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students.”

Additionally, Vice-Chancellors are advised to issue specific statements to reassure staff and students of their safety. The circular further advises students to remain on campus and focus on their academic pursuits to avoid exposure to potential dangers during the planned protests.

The directive concludes with, “Please accept the renewed assurances of my highest considerations and best wishes.”
