The Nigerian Ministry of Education has strongly denied any involvement in a proposed debate allegedly organized by the Creative Africa Initiative, which promotes the legalization of same-sex marriage. The ministry issued a statement through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, expressing concern over a forged letter circulating with the ministry’s letterhead, falsely claiming its support for the event.
The statement clarified that the Ministry of Education has no affiliation with the Creative Africa Initiative or the controversial debate it purportedly aims to promote. The ministry emphasized that the topic of the debate, “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized in Nigeria,” is highly sensitive and contradicts the cultural, religious, and legal values upheld by the majority of Nigerians.
Boriowo’s statement noted that the forged document contains a reference number associated with the defunct Basic and Secondary Education Department, which was dissolved on June 17, 2021. The letterhead used in the forgery also displays an outdated reference number and a superimposed font, further proving its inauthenticity.
The Ministry warned that such a debate could disrupt public peace, lead to unnecessary tension, and cause societal division. It urged stakeholders to disregard the fake communication and to rely only on official announcements from the Ministry for information about future debates and educational initiatives.
The Ministry has reported the matter to security agencies for investigation and necessary action. It also clarified that the 2024 debate organized by the Senior Secondary Education Department bears no relation to the content or timing mentioned in the forged letter, which inaccurately schedules an event for April 2025.
