President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening partnerships with the United Kingdom in key sectors such as trade, security, arts, and culture. Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s readiness for enhanced collaboration during a meeting on Monday with David Lammy, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, at the State House in Abuja.
Highlighting the historical ties between Nigeria and the UK, President Tinubu underscored the importance of fostering unity and inclusivity in their relationship. He urged the UK to broaden its focus in Africa, specifically in supporting peace efforts in countries experiencing instability, such as Sudan. Tinubu also acknowledged the economic challenges facing West Africa, noting Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to manage regional security issues and accommodate displaced persons from countries like Mali and Burkina Faso.
“Britain should do more to bring peace and stability to that part of Africa,” President Tinubu stated, encouraging the UK to prioritize humanitarian issues across the continent alongside its commitments in Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy, visiting Nigeria as part of his first African tour, echoed the commitment to strengthening ties. He conveyed the UK’s intent to forge new partnerships that support Africa’s growth and address emerging challenges. He noted that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government is committed to supporting economic growth, which Lammy emphasized as essential for peace and stability. Lammy also affirmed that Nigeria’s economic reforms are pivotal to investor confidence and long-term prosperity.
Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar highlighted several agreements reached between Nigeria and the UK, covering areas such as trade, investment, job creation, security, and migration. The partnership aims to modernize and expand people-to-people connections, enhancing mutual growth and development.
This renewed partnership underscores both countries’ shared vision of fostering sustainable economic growth, enhancing security, and strengthening cultural bonds.
