NDLEA Strengthens Efforts Against Drug Barons and Cartels

Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (retd), Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has announced that the agency’s enhanced capabilities in maritime operations will significantly tighten the grip on drug barons and cartels, following a series of recent arrests and seizures of illicit substances at seaports and along waterways.

Marwa made this statement during the commissioning of the NDLEA Marine Command Headquarters, a facility built and donated by the British government in Lagos.

He expressed gratitude to the British High Commission in Nigeria for its investment in the project, stating, “The timely delivery of this facility and the high standards of construction reflect the British government’s commitment to supporting our efforts. Recently, a similar state-of-the-art facility was handed over to NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.”

Marwa highlighted ongoing capacity-building initiatives and equipment provisions by the Home Office International Operations, which have strengthened the agency’s personnel and led to significant drug seizures and arrests. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among security agencies operating in maritime environments, noting, “The operation of our special marine squad in Lagos has revealed the complexities of maritime drug trafficking. In addition to merchant ships, personal vessels such as luxury yachts, modified pump boats, and fishing trawlers are increasingly being used in this trade.”

British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter addressed the audience, underscoring the UK government’s support for the NDLEA’s work. “It’s encouraging to see such a diverse group here today, which reflects the commitment from our Nigerian partners to tackle drug trafficking effectively. The rise in drug detections in both Nigeria and the UK highlights the urgent need for collaboration in addressing this issue,” he stated.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Abimbola Salu Hundeyin, praised the NDLEA’s efforts in combating illegal drug trade. “The NDLEA’s presence in Lagos has been crucial in protecting our citizens and enhancing the security of our state. Today’s commissioning of the Marine Command Headquarters marks a significant milestone in our collective fight against drug-related crimes,” she said.

She concluded by expressing gratitude to the British government for its invaluable contribution, which will further empower the NDLEA to patrol the waters effectively and intercept illegal drug activities.
