Urgent Warning: NIHSA Alerts Nigerians of Upcoming Flood Risks from Lagdo Dam Release

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) announced yesterday that water has been released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon into the Niger and Benue Rivers. In light of this development, the agency has urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate immediately to safer locations to prepare for potential flooding, a recurring issue following such releases.

This warning comes shortly after the overflow from the Alau Dam resulted in the tragic deaths of over 30 individuals and the destruction of numerous homes in Maiduguri, Borno State, just last weekend. During a segment on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, NIHSA Director General Umar Mohammed, represented by Director of Operations and Hydrology Femi Bejide, explained that discussions with Cameroonian officials have led to a phased release of water to manage the flow into Nigeria and mitigate flooding risks in 11 states.

According to Mohammed, the release of water from Lagdo Dam began on Wednesday, with an agreement in place for intermittent discharges to help manage the volume. On Tuesday, the federal government had already informed citizens about the impending water release.

Flood-prone states identified by NIHSA include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers. Although the current situation is stable, with water levels being regulated, the agency emphasizes the importance of community preparedness.

Mohammed stressed that everyone has a role to play in flood prevention, urging individuals to heed warnings and move away from floodplain areas as part of a collective effort to address this ongoing challenge.
