Supreme Court Ruling on Local Government Autonomy Applauded by Senate President and Attorney General

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi have lauded the recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government administrations in Nigeria. Their remarks came following a meeting at the Presidential Villa with President Bola Tinubu, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other senior government officials.

Akpabio described the ruling as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, emphasizing its importance in upholding the separation of powers and ensuring autonomy across all arms of government. He stressed the legislative commitment to fully implementing the Supreme Court’s decision, urging all states to comply accordingly.

“This is a great day for democracy,” Akpabio remarked. “Local government administration is an essential arm of government meant for the grassroots, and their finances should be utilized accordingly. With this ruling, local governments can now independently undertake projects for the benefit of their communities.”

Akpabio also addressed concerns over the non-conduct of local government elections by some governors, advocating for impartial elections that allow all political parties to participate.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, describing it as “local government emancipation.” He highlighted the ruling’s potential to empower local governments in developing their respective areas.

The Supreme Court’s endorsement of financial autonomy for local governments marks a significant shift towards decentralization and grassroots empowerment in Nigeria’s governance structure.
