REPS Urges Unified Effort to Tackle Malnutrition and Food Insecurity

The House of Representatives has called for robust collaboration between national and sub-national governments, along with development partners, to combat malnutrition and enhance food security across Nigeria. This call was made by Hon. Chike Okafor, Chairman of the Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, during the launch of the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security in Abuja.

The event also featured the investiture of Hon. Tajudeen Abbas as the national patron of the network, alongside workshops for the newly constituted leadership of State Houses of Assembly committees on nutrition and food security.

Hon. Okafor emphasized that persistent hunger among the poor impacts the peace and security of all citizens. He highlighted that malnutrition and food insecurity are significant threats to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, worsened by rising inflation and insecurity. Okafor noted the deteriorating food security situation since the previous meeting with State Assembly speakers in Owerri.

Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, reiterated the network’s dedication to reducing malnutrition and improving food security. He assured his unwavering support for the network and its work plan, committing to galvanize legislative efforts nationwide to address these challenges. Ogundoyin praised the collaboration between the National Assembly and the 36 State Houses of Assembly, stressing that the network will ensure a unified approach to monitoring and implementing nutrition and food security projects.

In summary, the House of Representatives stressed the urgency of a coordinated effort to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity, with legislative bodies at all levels working together to achieve significant improvements in the health and well-being of Nigerians.
