REPs to Hold Emergency Plenary on Wednesday Amidst Tensions Over Planned Protest

The House of Representatives will convene an emergency plenary session on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. This decision was communicated through an internal memo dated July 28, 2024, and signed by the Clerk to the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria. The directive was issued by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD.

The memo emphasized the importance of the session and requested all members to attend, despite the interruption of the annual recess, which was initially scheduled to last until September 17. The memo read:

“On the directive of the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, please be informed that there will be a plenary sitting on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. You are kindly requested to make necessary arrangements to attend, as important matters will be deliberated upon during this session. We regret any inconvenience caused by the interruption of the annual recess. However, we count on the dedication and patriotism that the 10th Assembly is known for. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.”

While the specific agenda for the emergency plenary has not been disclosed, it is widely speculated that the session will address the escalating tensions surrounding the planned nationwide protest on August 1, 2024. The protest, organized to highlight economic hardships, has generated significant concern regarding potential violence.

In anticipation of the protest, military personnel have taken precautionary measures by blocking major roads leading to Abuja in a show of force. This action follows a minor hunger protest in Suleja, Niger State, and the deployment of heavy security in key areas of Lagos, including Ojota, Oshodi, Ojuelegba, and parts of Lagos Island.

Organizers of the protest remain steadfast in their decision to proceed, despite calls from various quarters to abandon the plan due to fears of violence. The emergency plenary session is expected to address these concerns and explore potential measures to mitigate any disruptions or unrest.

The nation awaits the outcome of the House’s deliberations, hoping for a resolution that ensures both the expression of democratic rights and the maintenance of public order.
