In a compelling address at the 2024 Annual Congress of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) Alumni Association, Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu, a renowned academic and former Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), emphasized the pivotal role that the alumni association plays in shaping the future of the institution. The event, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, brought together key stakeholders and distinguished figures from various sectors to discuss how the association can contribute to the development and success of BUK.
Professor Abdallah, who served as the Guest Speaker, underscored the importance of alumni networks in advancing the goals of universities worldwide. Drawing on examples from institutions in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, he highlighted how alumni associations have become powerful tools for collaboration and development. “The essence of alumni cannot be overemphasized, especially considering the role they play in bringing former students together to address critical issues and drive institutional progress,” he remarked. He further encouraged members of the BUK Alumni to work in unity, leveraging their collective expertise to bring about positive change for their alma mater.
The event was graced by several prominent figures, including Dr. Suwaiba Sani Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, who in his remarks described the congress as an important initiative for fostering deeper connections among alumni members. He emphasized that the congress serves as a crucial platform for reuniting BUK graduates and facilitating meaningful contributions toward the university’s success.
Malam Shuaibu Idris, a former gubernatorial aspirant in Kaduna State, also took the opportunity to announce that the alumni association is working on establishing a center dedicated to knowledge sharing, consultation, and support for its members. The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Malam Jibril Baba Ndace, offered his support to the association, commending the efforts of the alumni executives in organizing the event. In a show of support, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, expressed his commitment to ensuring that Bayero University becomes the best institution in Nigeria in terms of facilities and academic excellence. His pledge further demonstrated the growing interest in enhancing the university’s standing at both the national and international levels.
The congress included a thought-provoking panel session chaired by Mr. Alhassan Muhammad, the President of the BUK Alumni Abuja Chapter.
