Abuja, Nigeria – June 12, 2024: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced that his administration will soon introduce an executive bill to the National Assembly to formalize a newly agreed national minimum wage, enshrining it in Nigeria’s legislation for the next five years. Speaking during a nationwide live broadcast commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Nigeria’s democracy, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of reasoned discussion and principled compromise, emphasizing these as essential components of a democratic society.
President Tinubu assured the public that the cooperative approach taken with organized labor would continue to guide his administration’s policies and interactions with key economic stakeholders. “In this spirit, we have engaged in good-faith negotiations with organized labor regarding a new national minimum wage. We will soon forward an executive bill to the National Assembly to codify the agreed terms into law for the next five years,” he stated.
Addressing the recent calls for a national strike by labor unions, Tinubu emphasized that his administration chose dialogue over repression. “In response to labor’s call for a national strike, we opted for cooperation over conflict. No arrests were made, and no threats were issued. Instead, we invited labor leaders for negotiations to reach a fair and constructive resolution,” he said.
President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to fostering a fair and just society. “Reasoned discussion and principled compromise are hallmarks of democracy. These principles will continue to guide my policies and interactions within our political economy. I take on this vital task without fear or favor and am committed to building a Nigeria where no one is oppressed,” he concluded.
