PRESIDENT TINUBU DISMISSES LEADERS OF TWO REGULATORY BODIES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has terminated the appointments of Mr. Alexander Ayoola Okoh, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, and Mr. Babatunde Irukera, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. The announcement of their dismissal was conveyed in a statement issued on Monday by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

The President instructed the immediate removal of the two Directors General, directing them to hand over to the most senior officers in their respective agencies. This action, according to the President, is part of a broader initiative to restructure and reposition key government agencies to safeguard the rights of Nigerian consumers and enhance the contribution of pivotal growth-enabling institutions to the nation’s economy.

Former President Buhari had renewed Mr. Alexander Ayoola Okoh’s appointment as the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises on April 10, 2021, for a second 5-year term. The BPE is tasked with economic reforms, particularly the privatization and commercialization of government-owned enterprises, and serves as the secretariat of the National Council on Privatization.

On the other hand, the dismissed Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission had been appointed to oversee the transition of the commission on January 30, 2019.
