The Nigerian Base Defence Company (NBDC 1), led by Colonel Esidiong Nkereuwem, deployed to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), has been honored with the UN Medal Award. Major General Benjamin Sawyerr, Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander at UNISFA, presented the medals, praising the contingent’s professionalism and contribution to global peacekeeping efforts.
The NBDC-1, comprising 160 personnel initially and later expanded to 171, including a notable contingent of 32 female peacekeepers, demonstrated exceptional performance in protecting the Force and Mission Headquarters, engaging in CIMIC activities to support the Abyei community, and enhancing UNISFA’s operational efficiency.
Colonel Nkereuwem’s leadership was lauded for maintaining discipline and ensuring Nigeria’s strong representation in UNISFA. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including traditional leaders, mission officials, and military personnel, underscoring the significance of the Nigerian contingent’s achievements.
