The Nigerian government has intensified consultations regarding the plan to reopen the nation’s land borders with neighboring countries. Representatives from affected nations are being engaged to chart a path forward in this endeavor.
Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), revealed this during a press briefing at the State House on Tuesday, following the inauguration of the National Single Window Project. Adeniyi disclosed that he has been in discussions with counterparts from Benin Republic and Niger Republic.
Addressing journalists, CG Adeniyi emphasized that the factors leading to the border closures are under review, with a focus on preventing their recurrence. He highlighted the steady progress being made in this regard.
Adeniyi commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s economy, particularly through the newly launched National Single Window Project. As a member of the Presidential Steering Committee overseeing the project’s implementation, Adeniyi underscored its significance in fostering coordinated border management.
While reflecting on the importance of the Single Window system, Adeniyi expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering commitment, which he described as a critical factor for the success of such collaborative initiatives.
Regarding the border reopening, Adeniyi confirmed ongoing high-level consultations, including recent engagements with officials from Benin Republic and visits to Nigeria’s borders with Niger Republic. He reiterated the government’s resolve to address the root causes of the border closure and ensure enhanced border security and efficiency, particularly with the deployment of the Single Window system at ports and border stations.
