NIGERIA AND EITI JOIN FORCES FOR SOLID MINERALS REFORM

The Nigerian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to enhance transparent and accountable resource management and governance programs within the solid minerals sector.

Dr. Oladele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, provided this assurance during the visit of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) delegation to the Ministry. Dr. Alake highlighted the Ministry’s extensive engagements with NEITI since 2011, emphasizing the positive impact on operations and the determination to reform the sector.

The Minister affirmed the Ministry’s adherence to the principles promoted globally by EITI, such as reliable information and data, strict adherence to good governance, transparency, and accountability. According to Dr. Alake, these principles are intentionally integrated into the plans and policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to reform the mining sector.

Dr. Alake expressed the administration’s strong determination to elevate the country’s mining sector, surpassing oil and gas in revenue generation, attracting investment, and serving as an alternative domestic resource mobilization base, while also contributing to job creation and poverty reduction.

Highlighting the impactful collaboration with NEITI over the years, the Minister emphasized NEITI’s role as a dependable ally and partner in data generation, analysis, and utilization for national planning and development.

Regarding NEITI’s last report for 2021, Dr. Alake assured the visitors that the Ministry is actively addressing the recommendations and implementing actions to strengthen operations, stimulate growth, and regulate the sector.

Dr. Alake acknowledged the Ministry’s overall score of 72 percent in the global EITI assessment, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the credibility and global recognition of NEITI’s reports. He noted that the data and information provided by NEITI align with the Federal Government’s economic agenda and national priorities.

Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, the Executive Secretary of NEITI, highlighted the purpose of the EITI delegation’s visit, emphasizing areas of support to strengthen operations, particularly with agencies under the Ministry.

Mr. Bady Baldi, a member of the delegation, commended Nigeria’s milestone achievements in implementing EITI objectives. He specifically praised the establishment of an electronic Cadastre system, facilitating the disclosure of data, beneficial ownership information, and the Ministry’s policies ensuring transparency and accountability in the sector.
