NANS Denies Shutdown Plans, Demands Investigation into False Reports

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims that it plans to initiate a nationwide shutdown of major cities in response to the recent increase in petrol prices. A statement attributed to the association had announced protests beginning September 15, 2024, and called for the reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL).

NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, dismissed these claims as false and called on security agencies to investigate the source of the misinformation.

“We strongly urge the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard these false reports. The individuals or groups behind these rumours are faceless entities who seek to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes,” Akinteye stated.

He criticized the use of NANS’ name to propagate false claims, describing it as a threat to national security and a disservice to students who genuinely seek positive change through legitimate means. Akinteye emphasized that NANS is committed to pursuing its mission through peaceful and lawful channels and urged security agencies to take action against those spreading misinformation and attempting to incite unrest.

“NANS remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We will continue to pursue this mission through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels. Let it be known that NANS stands firmly for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation,” Akinteye concluded.
