The Nigerian Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, is determined to revolutionize and reposition the ministry for the betterment of Nigerian youth and the nation as a whole.
In a statement released by the ministry in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Bio-Ibrahim reaffirmed her commitment to empower the country’s youth by establishing sustainable opportunities. She emphasized a visionary and revolutionary approach, covering education, skills development, and empowerment across various sectors.
The minister outlined several policies and initiatives aimed at transforming youth development in Nigeria. Notable initiatives include the upcoming launch of the “NextGen Bank” in April 2024, a collaborative effort with the Bank of Industry, private sector, and development partners. This retail development financial institution is dedicated to empowering youth and youth-led ventures.
Other initiatives include the creation of Youth Villages, a revamped National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), and NYSC Reforms focusing on employability and entrepreneurship for post-service transitions. Additionally, there are programs for non-graduates and at-risk youths, along with the establishment of the Young Leaders’ Institute to cultivate visionary leaders.
The minister proposed a mandatory 30% youth quota in government appointments as a significant move towards integrating the Nigerian youth into the nation’s governance and policymaking. Dr. Bio-Ibrahim expressed her commitment to making this proposal a reality, heralding a new era of youth empowerment and participation.
She extended gratitude to development partners such as the EU Commission, World Bank, Ford Foundation, Bank of Industry, AfDB, Africa Union – NEPAD, and others for their instrumental support in shaping the ministry’s transformative programs.
