Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) respectively in the 2023 elections, have strongly condemned recent statements made by Amaka Sunnberger, a Canada-based individual. Sunnberger, during a virtual meeting on TikTok, allegedly threatened violence against Yoruba and Benin people, prompting outrage and calls for action.
Atiku Abubakar expressed his condemnation of the remarks via a series of tweets on X (formerly Twitter). He praised the swift response of the House of Representatives and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in addressing the threat. Atiku emphasized that the threats of ethnic cleansing against the Yoruba and Benin communities are unacceptable and noted that law enforcement agencies in Canada have been urged to prosecute those responsible. He underscored the importance of national unity and the protection of Nigeria’s diverse heritage.
Peter Obi also condemned the statements, describing them as extreme bigotry. He highlighted that such divisive rhetoric has no place in society and should be universally rejected. Obi criticized tribalism and emphasized the need for Nigerians to focus on common challenges rather than succumbing to hate. He called for unity and competent leadership to address the nation’s issues, stressing that tribalism does not contribute to solving the fundamental problems facing the country. Obi urged Nigerians to work together to build a prosperous and equitable nation, transcending ethnic divisions.
Both leaders’ reactions reflect a broader call for solidarity and cooperation among Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic background, and a commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges through unity and effective governance.
