Libyan Football Federation in Crisis Amid AFCON Qualifying Match Controversy

The Libyan Football Federation is facing significant pressure after receiving a request from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to submit documents regarding the cancellation of the AFCON qualifying Group D match against Nigeria. This situation arose when the Nigerian team refused to play following an 18-hour ordeal, during which their plane was diverted to Labraq Airport and they were held without food and water.

Nasser Al-Suwaie, the Secretary-General of the Libyan Football Federation, confirmed to Libya Al-Ahrar Channel that both the Libyan and Nigerian football associations have until the 20th of this month to provide the necessary documentation. Al-Suwaie mentioned that the Federation has enlisted a specialized lawyer to gather evidence and expressed concerns about possible collusion among certain CAF members, although he maintained that the Libyan Federation’s stance is robust.

He further clarified that the Libyan FA did not alter the flight path of the plane, attributing the landing change to a decision made by the Libyan government, emphasizing that the sovereignty of Libya should be respected by all parties involved.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles returned to Nigeria recounting a harrowing experience, including having to take turns sleeping on the bare airport floor. Team manager Patrick Pascal detailed how Libyan officials had deliberately left the restroom in a deplorable state in anticipation of their arrival.
