The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has flagged 21 candidates who presented fake Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) results for the 2023 admissions process. According to a policy document obtained from JAMB’s Abuja office, these candidates were recommended for admission by various institutions, but none were approved due to the fraudulent nature of their results.
Among the flagged cases, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, recommended 12 candidates, a significant proportion of the total. JAMB criticized this as an “audacious attitude,” noting that the recommendations occurred because certificate screening was conducted after registration.
JAMB’s policy requires that all certificates must bear the signature of the institution’s Head (Vice-Chancellor, Provost, or Rector). The discrepancies were discovered through JAMB’s Nigerian Post-Secondary Education Data System verification platform, introduced in 2021 to counter irregularities in IJMB and JUPEB results.
The unveiling of this verification platform followed a joint operation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Federal Ministry of Education, which revealed significant issues with result faking.
In a bulletin, JAMB emphasized the necessity of these verification measures to prevent the erosion of the gains achieved in the education sector. The board has pledged to continue implementing proactive measures to tackle these issues and maintain the integrity of the admissions process.
These recent revelations highlight the ongoing challenges in managing examination integrity and underscore JAMB’s commitment to upholding rigorous standards in Nigeria’s educational system.
